Machhiwara: A shocking turn of events has emerged from Machhiwara, where former Punjabi singer Paramjit Kaur Pammi has been arrested in a drug peddling case. Once known for earning a respectable livelihood through Punjabi singing and stage performances at rural fairs, Pammi’s life reportedly took a drastic turn after the Covid-19 pandemic stalled her career.
According to police officials, Paramjit Kaur was arrested along with her brother Swaran Singh during Operation Prahar 2.0, a special drive targeting drug smugglers and gangsters. The Machhiwara police recovered 8 grams of heroin from the duo two days ago.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Samrala, Tarlochan Singh, stated that Paramjit Kaur is a resident of Rahimabad Khurd, Machhiwara. While her mother Raj Kaur and sister Beant Kaur were already involved in drug peddling and facing multiple cases, Pammi had initially focused on her singing career.
However, when the Covid-19 pandemic halted stage shows and income sources, she reportedly fell into drug addiction. Eventually, she joined her family’s illegal drug trade. Police records show that Raj Kaur has four cases registered against her, while Beant Kaur faces seven cases of drug smuggling.
Interestingly, when the first drug case was registered against her mother and sister on August 17, 2018, Paramjit Kaur was actively engaged in her singing profession.
Pammi first came into the spotlight in 2023 when she allegedly supplied drugs to a youth who later died of an overdose. She was arrested under charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. After being released from jail, instead of returning to music, she allegedly resumed involvement in drug trafficking and also influenced her brother Swaran Singh to join, reportedly considering it an easy source of income.
DSP Tarlochan Singh stated that although the recent heroin recovery marks her first direct drug peddling case, she had allegedly been involved in the family’s drug business for the past four years but managed to avoid arrest until now.
SHO of Machhiwara police station, Inspector Pavitar Singh, said that since all family members are allegedly involved in the illegal trade and are also drug addicts, the police have initiated a probe to identify any properties acquired through drug proceeds. Such properties will be attached under legal provisions.
Police also revealed that Paramjit Kaur and her mother had reportedly set up a dera at their residence, where Raj Kaur posed as a saint. Authorities suspect that drugs were allegedly sold under the guise of religious gatherings. Investigations are underway to uncover the full supply network and dismantle the entire chain.
The case highlights not only the growing drug menace in the region but also the tragic downfall of a once-promising artist whose career disruption during the pandemic allegedly led her down a dangerous path.
